George F. Smith, CPF, is an International Association of Facilitators (IAF) -Certified Professional Facilitator and a specialist in strategic and quality management. With over 30 years of experience in both the Army and state government, George has exceptional experience in large organization group dynamics, meeting and event planning, organizational redesign, leadership development and training, change management, and business and strategic planning.
George gained leadership experience as an Army Officer through command assignments from Infantry Platoon to Brigade level. His military career also included responsibilities for research and development, officer pre-commissioning training and development, financial and logistical management, and the development of joint-level operational exercises. He retired from the Army as a Colonel. George spent six years with the Georgia Department of Defense, a state agency, initially as an internal consultant to the Department Head, and later directing the business support staff, including, construction and facilities management, information technology, state finance and organizational development. He was responsible for implementation of the departmental strategic management process and was a key member of the change management team that guided the department through a total transformation. As a member of the Georgia Oglethorpe Award Process (GOAP) Board of Examiners (the state-level Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Criteria for Performance Excellence) and the Texas Award for Performance Excellence Board of Examiners, he is experienced in application review and on site assessments. He is also experienced with the Army Performance Improvement Criteria (APIC), having assisted the Georgia Army National Guard prepare its award winning application. He was a key member of the Georgia Department of Defense team that prepared its first Georgia Oglethorpe Award Application in 2000, and, as a private consultant, assisted the Department in writing its winning application in 2001. The 2006 recipient of the Georgia Oglethorpe Award, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority, used George’s knowledge and experience to help write their winning application. As a Certified Professional Facilitator, George has extensive experience with both large and small groups. Customers have included the Turner Entertainment Network, Oregon Public Purchasing Association, Georgia Department of Public Safety, Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education, EPIC Response, Inc., Georgia Department of Education, the Centers for Disease Control, U.S. Army Garrison- Fort Hood, and the U.S. Army Infantry Center at Fort Benning, Georgia. His experience includes the planning and facilitation of a wide-range of meetings, from staff meetings (10-20 participants) to semi-annual strategic planning workshops (30-40 participants) and senior leadership conferences of over 150 participants. He has recently conducted multi-day workshops for over 200 participants. As a Trainer, he has taught Facilitation, Leadership Development, Visioning, Strategic Planning, and Managing Change to a variety of groups. As a Speaker, George brings humor and experience to his presentations on leadership, organizational performance improvement, and teamwork. He draws from his wide range of personal experiences as a teenage merchant seaman, combat soldier, amateur actor, sky-diver, and skier to engage his audiences. George is a Past President of the Atlanta Chapter of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals, a national professional association dedicated to improving the quality and cost effectiveness of government meetings. He is a founding member and Past President of the Southeast Association of Facilitators. George has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering Degree from The Georgia Institute of Technology. He is also a graduate of the Duke University Fuqua School of Business Program for Manager Development. |
